The completed project presented in this volume is an attempt to resolve the dichotomy between private and public space, at the same time focusing on ways of life and housing typology. The three French architects, Eric Babin, Gaëtan Le Penhuel and Jean-François Renaud, winners of the Europan 3 competition for this site in Reims (France), opted to build up the edges of the block in order to create light, tree-lined inner courtyards which form a transition between the privacy of the housing units and the public space. They also bring light to the underground car parks which open onto these courtyards. (extrait du site internet http://www.europan-europe.com/pages_eng/publication/realisations3.php)

Thirty years of the Portuguese architectural powerhouse behind Harvard Square’s new theater. This publication surveys the projects of Portuguese architectural firm Promontorio from the past 30 years. Formed in 1990 as an experimental studio, the full-service firm has grown into a team of 50 architects, planners, landscape architects, interior designers and graphic designers. Although Promontorio works predominantly within their country of origin, it casts a wide net, geographically and functionally speaking, developing projects across Europe, Africa, the Middle East and the US that serve a diverse roster of needs―from schools, museums and cultural institutions to housing, offices, hotels and retail. The practice is distinguished by its penchant for sharp lines and concrete, as emblematized by the Egyptian consulate building in Lisbon (2017), AC Marriott Portsmouth Hotel in Portsmouth, New Hampshire (2017) and Harvard Square Theater in Cambridge (2021, with Merge Architects).

In Cachan, a suburb south of Paris, Ateliers O-S Architectes was commissioned with transforming a local theatre building, originally built in the early twentieth century, into a thriving cultural centre. The commission went well beyond merely rebuilding and modernising an existing structure. Rather, the firm was tasked with creating an entirely new neighbourhood. Everything but the auditorium and stage of the old building was demolished and replaced with a more spacious, new complex including an additional hall, a new foyer and exhibition space, a restaurant, and new rooms for building and stage equipment. The neighbouring tennis court became a public park.
